Newfoundland and Labrador is remembering Frank Howard, a respected business leader whose entrepreneurial spirit helped reshape the province’s automotive landscape. Howard, the President and Founder of Capital Auto Group, passed away yesterday after a courageous battle with cancer.
Frank’s career was built on determination, innovation, and a belief in what was possible. From a modest beginning with one dealership, he grew his vision into what is now Capital Auto Group, a major employer in the province with more than 500 team members representing 10 automotive brands. His success also extended into real estate through The Howard Group, which oversees the Howard Properties portfolio and continues to play a significant role in local development.
His contributions to the industry and community earned him widespread respect. Frank received numerous accolades, including the prestigious CADA Laureate Award for Ambassadorship, recognizing leadership and civic responsibility. His most recent honour—induction into the Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame—underscored the depth of his impact on local business and mentorship.
To those who knew him best, Frank’s greatest measure of success was not financial growth but community giving. He believed that every accomplishment carried a responsibility to support the people and province that helped him succeed.
Honouring his wishes, the family will not hold a traditional wake or funeral. Instead, a celebration of life will be announced in the near future, offering friends, colleagues, and community members the opportunity to gather in his memory.
Frank Howard leaves behind a legacy of leadership, generosity, and vision that will continue to influence Newfoundland and Labrador for years to come.
